Austin seems to have more than its share of great eating places. This makes it difficult to visit all of them during one trip. Here is a list of our absolute favs!
Breakfast is typically whatever is on the LaQuinta breakfast buffet, hard-boiled egg, toast, coffee, pig-n-the-blanket. Not great but still it sustains. At least once, though, we HAVE to stop by Kerbey Lane. Scrambled eggs with biscuits and gravy for me and add pancakes for Coach. Yum!
We take the cheap route for lunch and just snack. That way, we're sure to be good and ready for dinner!

What do we want? Mexican? or Mexican?
Guerro's Taco Bar on South Congress is a neat hole-in-the-wall with great food. When you're waning due to a SoCo shopping frenzy, stop in for pretty much anything Tex-Mex. Chicken fajitas are our standard order, but dressing them with sauces and condiments from the "bar" adds the personal touch. If you're looking for something a little more upscale, try ZTejas or Moonshine. Located right on Chavez/1st Street, Moonshine is what you would call upscale homecooking. It's a bit pricier than most places we go, but the mac-n-cheese is to die for!
During a recent visit with the two sons (Tom and Will), we were treated to a true local favorite - Habanero. They'd been talking about this place for two years, so I made them promise to take us. Will already had his recommendation for us - Quesadillas Habanero with beef, while he selected Carnitas. I must say everything lived up to their reviews. De-licious! If you decide to try it, don't let the looks deceive you. Great authentic Mexican food is served there!
Our last two favorites require a bit of a drive. The Oasis, located on Lake Travis, has many diningrooms to choose from. The Captain's Bridge/Starlight Terrace is our spot! It's outdoor dining with live music and dancing starting in April. The fajitas aren't that special but the guacamole is, so it's worth it. If you're lucky enough to be there at sunset, you'll get to join in the celebration that begins with the ringing of the bell. It's cool!
The Salt Lick is located in Drippings Springs, which you'll remember is very close to Driftwood Vineyard. After noshing all day at the vineyard, you're ready for a stick-to-your-bones meal and The Salt Lick is just the place. As you walk in the door, you'll notice the huge, open pit where the meat is prepared. Quite a conversation piece, I'd say! The Coach and I usually share the entree, and the Beef, Sausage, Pork Rib Plate provided just enough for a sampling, along with potatoe salad and the yummiest beans! Leave a little bit of room for a delicious homemade pie or cobbler. You won't regret it! Special things to note: It's cash only and they don't serve liquor... but do invite you to BYOB. Another good reason to stop in at the vineyard first for a nice bottle of their own Lone Star Cab. A nice pairing!
Others worth mentioning are Hula Hut and their tubular tacos and Threadgill's, where Janis Joplin got her start in Texas. I know there are more that we're missing. What are your favorities?
